The Salesforce Lightning Design System (SLDS) provides over 1,000 icons across various categories, along with hundreds of illustrations and images via the Digital Asset Manager, enabling intuitive, cohesive user interfaces and consistent visual content for marketing, sales, and product teams.
Problem 🤔
Asset Management: Separate storage of illustrations and icons makes them hard to find and update, causing inconsistencies
Icon Design: Overuse of color in "chicklet icons" adds cognitive load and fails accessibility standards
Maintenance: Managing 1,200+ icons with duplicates and new requests strains resources, with cleanup costs exceeding $500k
Research 🔎
I organized two design jam workshops—one focused on icons and the other on illustrations—with participation from 18 designers across 10 product teams. Designers documented and shared their pain points related to icons and illustrations.
Competitive Analysis 📊
I conducted an audit of Salesforce’s DAM alongside several external tools, evaluating their user experiences by noting the strengths and weaknesses of each. The external tools I analyzed were: Iconscout, Nucleo, Blush, Google Icons, & The Noun Project, and more.

A side panel allows users to seamlessly switch between utility, standard, and action icons, with the option to export via code or download.
An Icon Builder within IIAAS enables advanced customizations, where users can easily submit requests for new icons.
Enhanced filtering options for Salesforce illustrations offer customers more precise control over asset selection.
When selecting a character image, related illustrations are surfaced at the bottom of the panel to increase discoverability.
Users can fully customize complex illustrations, such as spot illustrations, by modifying elements like the scene, foliage, animals, and more for a personalized visual experience.
